Smartphones have totally dominated the mobile phone arena today. Various models, sizes and magnificent features have graced the planet bringing us to ask – What’s next? With such tremendous advancement in technology some people are thinking of going unique and peculiar. To achieve this, sometimes that means going back in time.
Celcius X VI II that is – Celcius 10 6 2 for those who forget the “Old” Roman Numeral System, has introduced the LeDIX mobile phone. It’s quite significant first because it costs a fortune to have one and second because of its clock. What’s so extraordinary about it? This phone has a real-life “tik-tok” fully working mechanical clock embedded on its front flap.
Before we get ahead of ourselves let’s take a look what LeDIX is capable of. The mobile phone weighs 245g (quite heavy due to mechanical components of the watch) and due to its Titanium alloy casing. It has a total of roughly 600 mechanical parts – 330 of which were dedicated for watch movement. It has a battery compartment that is intended to be used by the mobile phone and can last up to 3.5 Hours of talk time.
It is a Tri-band GSM phone and can perform similar mobile phone functions like call, SMS, store phone numbers (luckily) although we’re not sure who the carrier will be. It has a 3.2 MP camera at the back with auto-zoom function and flash, a 2.2 in OLED display. When you decide to buy 1 out of 28 300,000 USD LeDIX you will also receive a retro-looking docking station and a holster (not sure if there’s a bonus handgun).
The mechanical watch inside the papillion/LeDIX phone is driven by mechanical components and needs to be wound every now and then. The designer thought of an “ingenious” way to recharge the clock that is by placing a mechanical crown near the hinge of the phone. Thus, everytime someone opens and closes the phone, the mechanical watch gets 3 hours worth of power.
Other than the artistry and poetic-looking design of the phone we thought that the LeDIX 300 Grand mobile phone is suited for antique collectors or filthy rich spoiled brats who don’t know how to spend their money. We’ve seen a couple of uber-luxury looking phone before like the Diamond and Gold iPhone 3GS Supreme that costs almost $3Million USD. I guess the latter is way better than the intricate “micromechanics” system of LeDIX. No intentions of trashing the phone since it boils down to one’s preferences although let’s be honest, in our day and age, people will simply prefer a smartphone with a digital interface rather than a mechanical mobile phone.
